Camogie History
1986 - 2008
The Camogie Club was first registered in September 1986 registering 3 teams – Under 11, Under 14 and a Junior team. Jim Carroll and Nell Kennedy were the driving force behind these teams with assistance at various times from Tony Larkin, Sean Whelan, Dan Linehan, Eugene Fitzgibbon and Danny Donohoe. With the necessary encouragement and leadership and a start up grant from from the PCA, the club began to grow.
The first Committee consisted of the following:-
Chairperson Margaret Noone
Secretary Orla Nic Aodha
Registrar Nell kennedy
Board Delegates Nell Kennedy & Jim Carroll
In 1989 Eileen Bernard was elected Chairperson – a position she held until November 2000. In her earlier playing career, Eileen won two Dublin Senior Championship and League medals with Eoghan Ruadh Club. She was also part of the successful Naomh Mearnog Junior C and Junior A teams in 1990 and 1991 respectively.
The other Officers elected at this time were:
Vice Chairperson Jim Carroll
Secretary Fiona Larkin
Delegate to Board Jim Carroll
1990/1991 The first ever Championship success of the Club was achieved in 1990 by the Junior C team, who also completed the double by winning the League. The following year, 1991, having been promoted to Junior A grade, they won the League and were runners-up in the Championship. These teams were trained by Jim Carroll who also represented the Club at County Board level. Jim’s popularity was such that he became the first male to be elected as chairperson of the Dublin County Board for the 1991/1992 season. The victorious Junior A 1991 team had amongst its ranks one of Dublin’s most successful Camogie players. Orla Ryan (nee Ni Shiochain) R. I. P. won 3 All-Ireland Senior Championship medals with Dublin in 1964, ’65 and ’66, 2 All-Ireland Club Championships with Austin Stacks and 10 Interprovincial titles with Leinster.
1991/1992 This season saw the start of a winning sequence at juvenile level when the Under 11 team, under the guidance of Paula Carroll and John McGarry, and with the behind the scenes help of Paul King, won the Dublin League. Paula herself was selected to play on the Dublin team that won the All-Ireland Intermediate title that year. She has the singular distinction of being the first Naomh Mearnog player to bring All-Ireland honours to the Club, while playing with the Club.
1993 This season brought the first juvenile Championship to the Club when the Under 12 team, coached by Noel Rooney and John McGarry, and with Paul King in the background, won the Dublin Championship. They were also runners-up in the League that season. Ciara Lucey and Sheila Byrne represented the Club on the Dublin U/14 team with Sheila Byrne being honoured with the Captaincy. Paula Carroll again featured on the Dublin Senior team. One of the highlights of the year was when the Club was honoured with a visit by the National President of the Camogie Association, Bridin Ni Mhaolagain. She visited the schools of the area, addressed the pupils and presented medals to winning teams.
1994 Camogie blossomed in Portmarnock this season with multiple successes at both club and school level. The Under 11 team trained by Jim Carroll and Eileen Bernard, won the Dublin League. The under 13 team achieved a notable double when they annexed both League & Championship titles and to add to their achievements they combined with the Under 14 team to win Division 2 of the Dublin Feile. The year was crowned with further glory when both schools in the area, St. Helen’s and St. Marnock’s won their respective school’s finals in Croke Park with teams backboned by the Naomh Mearnog Under 13 panel. Their coaches, Eugene Fitzgibbon and Pat Monaghan were justifiably proud of their schools’ achievements.
1995 This season was a very successful season with many fine achievements and with the Club fielding 5 teams at various levels. The Under 11’s won the League. The Under12’s won their League and were runners-up in the Championship. The U/13’s did not bring any medals home but had a good year. All three teams were trained by Eileen Bernard & Jim Carroll. The Under 14’s won their third consecutive Dublin Championship and also Division 1 of the Dublin Feile. This latter achievement proved to be the jewel in the crown of four years of notable successes for this talented team and resulted in them qualifying to represent Dublin in the National Feile in Limerick in June, a notable first for Naomh Mearnog. This was a great achievement for the girls and a just reward for the hard work and dedication of their coaches, Noel Rooney & John McGarry. Louise Rooney, Siobhan Madden, Sarah King and Jackie Carroll represented the Club on the Dublin U/14 team, Deirdre Carroll on the minor team.
1996 The Under 11’s won the League coached by Eileen & Fiona Bernard and Under 12’s won both Championship & League trained by Donie Power & Paddy Walsh and the Under 13’s won both Championship & League trained by Jim Carroll & Vincent Nolan. The Under 15’s won their 4th successive Championship and were runners-up in their League coached by Noel Rooney & John McGarry.
Ciara Duffy and Grainne McMackin represented the Club on the Dublin u/14 team and Jackie Carroll on the minor team and Naoise Ryan on the Dublin Junior team.
1997 This was the most successful year to date with the Club taking 9 cups at under age level The u/12’s won the double coached by Eileen and Fiona Bernard. The 13’s won the double coached by Donie Power and Paddy Walsh and u/14’s won the Championship, League and Dublin Feile division 1 thus qualifying for the National Feile in Waterford where they finished National runners-up. This team was coached by Jim Carroll & Vincent Nolan. The u/16’s won the double too and history was made by being the first team in Dublin to win 5 successive Championships. This very successful team was coached by Noel Rooney & John McGarry. A team mostly from the u/15’s and some u/16’s competed in the Pan Celtic competition in Tralee where they finished National runners-up after playing extra time. Vincent Nolan organised this trip and the ghost stories told at night while staying in a spooky hostel are still remembered by the girls with awe. The Club was represented by Ciara Duffy, Siobhan Bernard, Joanne King & Grainne Madden on the Dublin U/14’s Jackie Carroll Louise Rooney, Deirdre Magill & Siobhan Madden played with the Minors and won the first Leinster medals in the Club.
Naoise Ryan played with the Dublin Seniors.
1998 The u/11 won the Northside League, U/13’s Runners-up in League .coached by Eileen and Fiona Bernard The U/14’S Championship & League Winners and runners-up in the Dublin Feile. This team was coached by Donie Power & Paddy Walsh. The U/15’s were League & Championship winners with Vincent Nolan & Paul King in charge. and the u/16A were League runners-up under the guidance of Charlie McMackin & Maeve Duffy. Donie Power was one of the Selectors on the Dublin U/14 team and most of the Clubs u/14’s were on the county panel. Ciara Duffy and Grainne McMackin were on the Dublin Minor team.
1999 The Cups were getting scarce now! The U/14’s were runners-up in the Championship and in the Feile. They were beaten by just one score by Ballyboden who went on to win the National Feile. This team was coached by Eileen & Fiona Bernard, Noel Rooney and Richard Walsh. The U/15’S were Championship & League Winners again coached by Donie Power & Paddy Walsh. The U/16’S under the guidance of Vincent Nolan & Paul King were Championship runners-up. Vincent & Maeve Duffy teamed up to look after the Junior A team. The adult teams did not feature in the awards since ’91, so in ’98 Noel Rooney & John McGarry undertook the task of building up a good adult team and with most of the very successful team they had coached from the u/12 stage up, making up the backbone of the Senior B team and some players from the previous years Intermediate team Noel & John found success again winning both Championship & League in ’99 and being promoted to Senior A.
Andrea Fitzpatrick, Fionnuala Rooney, Niamh Taylor, Lisa Cahill & Sarah Neville represented the Club on the County U/14 team Grainne Madden, Siobhan Bernard, Ciara Duffy, Orla Kennedy and Joanne King on the minor team
2000 The U/11’S won the League, trained by Marcella Cox & Jim Carroll. The U/15’s were runners-up in Championship trained by Noel Rooney & Eileen Bernard. The U/16’S were Championship & League Winners trained by Donie Power & Paddy Walsh. This team not only equalled the record set by our own Clubs u/16’s of ’97 by winning 5 Championships-in-a-row but this team won the double 5 in-a-row which set a new record for the County Board. This year Vincent Nolan took on a Junior A team to make sure all the girls were getting games and they succeeded in being runners-up in the Championship. Sarah Neville represented the Club on the Dublin U/14’S, Ciara Duffy, Catriona Power, Aisling Murphy, Lisa Cahill, Niamh Taylor, Dearbhla Crowe, Morwenna Conway on the Dublin minor team. Fionnuala Rooney, Niamh Taylor, Lisa Cahill and Andrea Fitzpatrick on the minor team. Ciara Duffy, Siobhan Bernard, Grainne Madden & Catriona Power on the Dublin U/18’S. Fiona Bernard, Siobhan Bernard, Patricia Carroll & Naoise Ryan on the Dublin Junior team. Siobhan Madden represented the Club on the Dublin Senior team. Nell Kennedy stepped down from being Secretary after many years support to the Club and Orla Ryan was elected to replace her.
2002 The Intermediate team trained by Jim Carroll & Charlie McMackin won both the League & Cup and were promoted to Senior B grade for the ’03 season. Having 2 teams at Senior level augers well for the coming years. The U/16 team won the division 2 League . This team was trained by Michael O’Callaghan & Denise McConnell. For two years now Nessa Ni Laoire & Tim Maher are doing a wonderful job at nursery level every Saturday morning with the under 10’s.
